These videos, developed with funding from the National Surface Transportation Safety Center of Excellence (NSTSCE), provide tips CMV operators can use to make sure their driving skills are in top form. Make sure to visit the FMCSA Driving Tips, CMV Driving Safety, and the CMV Sharing the Road  sites for even more useful information.

Medication and Driving

Did you know prescription and over the counter medication can affect your ability to drive safely? Some drugs can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and blurred vision, making it more difficult for you to safely operate a vehicle. See the video below for more information on how you can stay safe while on the road.

Staying Healthy while Driving

Did you know commercial vehicle operators are at an increased risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and vascular diseases? Obesity is directly linked with these diseases. Make time each week for physical activity, plan your meals, and avoid fast food as much as possible to decrease your odds of contracting these diseases. See the video below for more information about staying healthy while driving.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Case Study

One in four commercial drivers may be at risk for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea or OSA. CMV drivers with OSA may suffer excessive daytime sleepiness which can impair performance and increase the risk of being in traffic or work related incidents. Additionally, OSA increases risk for serious health conditions. Find out more about the OSA case study, a project to examine the impact of treating OSA in commercial drivers.

Distracted Driving

Did you know, in 2013 there were 3,154 fatalities and 424,000 injuries involving distracted drivers? Distracted driving is more than just texting, it can also include smoking, eating, interacting with a passenger, or even reaching for an object.
